It has often been said that there is no substitute for experience and while shore-based theory lessons and well-structured sailing courses are an essential part of becoming a competent sailor, it’s the time spent onboard, putting theory into practice, improving skills, increasing knowledge, leaving miles and days in your wake, standing watch in fair and foul weather, dealing with the realities of live aboard cruising and gaining first-hand experience under sail, becoming more competent, that creates a real sailor.
